I have heard it said that women are like plants; they need water and warmth. The water is the nutrition from which she grows, and the warmth is affection through which she will open up and blossom. Without either of these, her soil or spirit can become brittle; she will wilt and slowly close.
When a woman is not loved and treated with honor, she will tell her husband, but he might not know what is happening. She may not even know it, but her drive, desire, and willingness to fight become less and less. His rejection and disregard of her concerns and feelings hurt her deeply. And like a plant that has no water or sunshine, her spirit dries up.
She knows that she deserves better; she knows she needs and deserves his warmth and affection, but she is not getting them. If she knows her Bible, she also knows that the Lord stated her worth: “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matt. 16:26). The Lord’s point is that one soul is worth the entire creation.
Her worth is more than the whole world, and she feels like she is being treated like a discarded piece of gum. Still, her husband may one day come around. He may hear God’s Word because God alone has the power to change us. And he may sincerely apologize for all of the things he has done and for the way he has treated her.
She may one day get the very thing she has always wanted, but if she has closed her spirit, her greatest enemy might be herself. Will she open her spirit again if it has been closed? Will she be in a place where she can accept his apologies? Every wife and husband must guard against closing their spirits against their spouses; God never closes his to us.
